Nocturnal Organism
Nocturnal Organism is a one-hour sound drama and deep listening performance by Korean artist Edith, weaving electronic music, spoken word and poetry into a meditation on existence, conscience and resistance.
Beginning with an existential question posed in a scene from Hong Sang-soo’s film The Day After, the performance enters the poetry of Korean poet Yun Dong-ju through the atmosphere of night. His poems, written under Japanese colonial rule, become a point of departure for exploring the inner tensions of an individual living between innocence and guilt, self-examination and resistance, constraint and the desire for freedom.
The work opens with a reinterpretation of Yun Dong-ju’s Night Walk (Ya-haeng), following the poet through a nocturnal landscape where the boundaries between the external world and the inner self begin to dissolve. At the heart of the performance is his poem Cross, whose themes of conscience, self-examination and longing for liberation resonate throughout the work.
Rather than portraying Yun Dong-ju’s poetry as a story of resignation, Nocturnal Organism approaches it as a living, restless presence, an organism that continues to breathe, question and search for meaning despite the conditions surrounding it.
Through electronic textures, experimental sound, voice and poetry, Edith transforms this inner struggle into a musical narrative: a nocturnal space where memory, fear, resistance and the desire for freedom coexist.
Nocturnal Organism invites the audience into an intimate listening experience, not simply to hear a story, but to inhabit a state of uncertainty, reflection and awakening.
Edith
Edith is a Korean singer-songwriter, sound artist and DJ based in London. Her practice moves between electronic music, experimental sound, poetry and performance, exploring questions of identity, memory, existence and resistance.
Drawing from Korean literature and cultural history, Edith reinterprets Korean texts through electronic and experimental sound. Her work brings together spoken word, field recordings, synthesised textures and live performance to create immersive listening experiences.
Her sound drama Nocturnal Organism is rooted in the poetry of Yun Dong-ju and explores the relationship between individual conscience, freedom and existence under colonial rule. Moving between poetry, cinema and electronic sound, the work transforms Yun’s inner world into a nocturnal musical landscape.
Alongside her solo practice, Edith performs as a musician and DJ and has presented her work internationally, including at Kiosk Radio in Brussels.
